Before words, babies understand touch. The traditional daily massage — warm oil, soft strokes, a mother's or grandmother's full attention — is nourishment for skin, muscles and the growing bond between you.
Choosing the oil
Pure cold-pressed coconut oil is a gentle, well-loved choice in our climate; unscented sesame oil is the traditional winter favourite. Whatever you choose, keep it pure and simple — no synthetic fragrance — and patch-test on a small area of baby's skin first.
The gentle how-to
Pick a calm moment when baby is fed but not full, warm the room and the oil, and use slow, light strokes — long sweeps on limbs, soft clockwise circles on the tummy. Keep oil away from tiny palms that go straight into mouths, and always keep one hand on baby.
Listen to the little boss
Some babies adore massage from day one; others take weeks to warm up. Fussing means pause and try later — the ritual should feel like love, never like a chore being done to them.
Ten quiet minutes of touch say what a thousand lullabies mean.
If baby has any skin condition or was born premature, check with your paediatrician about oils and timing first.
